Event includes site visits to Baker’s Camp Covered Bridge and Pine Bluff Covered Bridge
What: Presentation by Kurdziel Barker Engineering about Structure & Building of Historic Covered Bridges.
Brief presentation about the history of covered bridges in Putnam County, Indiana.
When: Saturday, May 17 at 10:30 AM EST Presentations at YMCA and
- 1:00 Baker’s Camp Covered Bridge site visit to explain the Burr Arch truss construction
- Location: East County Rd 675 North, Bainbridge, IN east of Bainbridge on Old Hwy 36
- 2:00 Pine Bluff Covered Bridge site visit to explain and show the Howe truss
- Location: North County Rd 425 East, Bainbridge, Indiana. Follow the signs north of North Putnam High School for “Fortune Woods.”
Who: The Heritage Preservation Society of Putnam County (HPS) is the sponsor of this
event to celebrate the remarkable covered bridges in our county.
Cost: There is no cost to attend but HPS is seeking free will donations from attendees which will be used to establish an endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation for the preservation of our beloved covered bridges.
Parking at the bridge sites:
Parking at the Baker’s Camp Bridge will be along the roadside.
Parking at Pine Bluff Bridge will be in the Nature Conservancy parking lots northwest of the bridge, approximately ½ mile away from Pine Bluff Bridge. Please plan to walk because there is NO parking at the bridge site. HPS will plan to shuttle people who cannot walk to the site. The roadway leading to the Pine Bluff Bridge will be closed off except for the shuttle service and any emergency vehicle. Parking will be limited. Please carpool if possible.
Optional Experience: After the Covered Bridge visits, there will be a guided hike in the Big Walnut Nature Preserve, owned by The Nature Conservancy. The hike will include a walk to see the magnificent trees in the nature preserve.
